Choosing a size

A 500ml bottle is for carrying — a commute, a desk, a gym bag. A 1L is the workhorse for a full day out or a boda commute where you will not refill. A 2L to 3L table flask is the one that sits at home or in an office and pours tea for a family or a meeting all morning. Above that, 6L water jugs are for events, shops and workshops where people serve themselves. Buy for the largest quantity you routinely carry, not the largest you can imagine needing.

How long does it actually stay hot?

A well-made double-wall steel vacuum flask holds tea drinkably hot for six to twelve hours, and holds cold water cold for longer than that. Two things decide where in that range you land: how full it is, and whether you pre-warmed it. Air is what steals the heat, so a flask filled to the top holds temperature far better than one half-full, and rinsing with boiling water before filling buys you an extra couple of hours. Neither costs anything.

Cleaning, and the smell problem

The complaint people have about flasks is that they start to smell, and the cause is almost always tea or milk residue in the seal rather than in the body. Take the stopper apart if it comes apart, and wash the gasket separately — that rubber ring holds more than it looks like it does. For the body, a spoon of bicarbonate of soda in hot water, left overnight, clears staining and odour. Do not put a vacuum flask in a dishwasher: the heat can compromise the seal between the walls, and once the vacuum is gone the flask is just a bottle.

Vacuum Flasks & Bottles in Uganda — frequently asked questions

How much is a vacuum flask in Uganda?
Vacuum flasks at Mars Kitchen Essentials start at about UGX 20,000 for a 500ml travel bottle. A 1L is around UGX 25,000–40,000 and 3L table flasks are about UGX 65,000.
How long does a vacuum flask keep tea hot?
Six to twelve hours for a good double-wall steel flask. Fill it to the top and rinse it with boiling water first — a half-empty flask loses heat much faster because of the trapped air.
Why does my flask smell of old tea?
Almost always the rubber gasket in the stopper rather than the body. Take the stopper apart and wash the seal separately, then soak the body overnight in hot water with a spoon of bicarbonate of soda.
Can I put a vacuum flask in a dishwasher?
No. Dishwasher heat can break the seal between the inner and outer walls, and once the vacuum is lost the flask stops insulating. Wash by hand.
