Glass, steel or plastic?

Glass is the most popular choice in our shop and the reason is visible scale: Kampala water is hard enough that limescale builds up quickly, and a glass body lets you see when it is time to descale rather than discovering it in your tea. Stainless steel is the most durable and the best choice if the kettle will be knocked about or used in an office. Plastic is the cheapest and the lightest, but it is the first to pick up a taste if it is left with water standing in it.

What size, honestly

A 1.7L to 2.2L kettle is the right size for almost every household — it boils four to six cups and reaches temperature in two to three minutes. Below that, a 0.8L is genuinely useful for one person in a hostel or an office desk because it boils in under a minute and wastes nothing. Above 2.5L you are buying for a purpose: 4.8L, 6L and 8L kettles are for shops, salons, offices and events, and they take proportionally longer to boil.

Descaling, and why it matters here

Hard water leaves a chalky layer on the element that makes the kettle slower and louder every month, and eventually burns it out. Fill to half with one part white vinegar or lemon juice to three parts water, boil, leave it an hour, then rinse twice. Once a month is enough for most households in Kampala. This single habit is the difference between a kettle lasting one year and lasting five, and it is not covered by any warranty.

Milk kettles

A milk kettle is a different appliance from an electric kettle, and worth knowing about before you buy the wrong one. It heats milk gently without scorching it on the base and without boiling over, which an ordinary kettle cannot do — milk proteins catch on a bare element. If you make tea with milk daily, or you are heating milk for a child, it is the tool for that job.

Electric Kettles in Uganda — frequently asked questions

How much is an electric kettle in Uganda?
Electric kettles at Mars Kitchen Essentials start at about UGX 38,000 for a 0.8L and run to UGX 95,000 for an 8L catering kettle. The common 1.7L–2.2L household sizes sit around UGX 45,000–50,000.
Is a glass kettle better than stainless steel?
Glass lets you see limescale building up, which matters with Kampala's hard water. Stainless steel is tougher and better for offices or busy kitchens. Both boil at the same speed; pick for durability or visibility.
How do I remove limescale from my kettle?
Half-fill with one part white vinegar or lemon juice to three parts water, boil, stand for an hour, then rinse twice. Doing this monthly keeps the element efficient and materially extends the kettle's life.
How much does it cost to boil a kettle?
A 2,000W kettle boiling for three minutes uses about 0.1 units — roughly UGX 75 at the domestic rate of about UGX 756 per unit. Boiling only the water you need is the easiest saving.
Do electric kettles come with a warranty?
Yes, 12 months, along with 7-day returns. Limescale damage from not descaling is the one thing a warranty will not cover, so it is worth the monthly habit.
