Where to start if you are equipping a kitchen

Buy for the meal you actually make most often. In Kampala households that is breakfast, which is why the electric egg boiler and the 3-in-1 breakfast maker are the two best-selling products in this category by a wide margin — the breakfast maker toasts, grills and brews in one unit and replaces three appliances on a small counter. A sandwich maker is the next most useful purchase for households with children. Everything else can wait until you know your own routine.

Food steamers and matooke

A multi-tier electric steamer cooks matooke, cassava, sweet potato and fish at the same time without any of them taking on another's flavour, and without standing over a pot. We stock 28cm, 30cm and 32cm; the 30cm suits a family of four to six. The practical advantage over a sufuria on the hob is that the tiers stack, so one heat source does the work of three burners — which matters when your cooker has two plates.

Running costs and standby

Small appliances are cheap to run precisely because they are small and used in bursts. A 2,000W kettle boiling for three minutes and a 1,000W toaster running for two both land well under UGX 100 per use at the domestic rate of about UGX 756 a unit. The thing worth watching is not power draw but a habit: appliances with a clock or a standby light draw a trickle continuously, so switch off at the wall if your household is managing a Yaka budget carefully.

Warranty and after-sales

Every appliance in this category carries a 12-month warranty, and you can see it working before you buy: we will run a free video call to demonstrate the unit and confirm what is in the box. If something fails, come to the shop at Skylight Arcade on Kikuubo Road or send a message on WhatsApp and we will handle the claim. Returns for any reason are accepted within 7 days.
